Inquiry 5 – Final Reflection

Reflection on my most memorable class in my very first semester

When knowing ENG 109 is the first class of my week, which starts at 8 pm, I hope I could just pass it. It is due to the fact that I am a night owl, so getting up early and going to the class that I am really bad at are disasters. Honestly, I was the worst student in the Literature class in my high school, I lack the ability to think of new ideas and express it in a clear and well-organized way. However, after taking this course, I am feeling so fortunate because of having such wonderful friends and professor like in this class. I want to say thanks to professor Ahmed, who gave me numerous tasks to do, which actually boost my work rate, and helpful, thorough advice to improve my writing style. Previously, I never have thought I could write such a long essay like in the Inquiry 3, but the professor has changed my mind by going through every small steps. He taught me how to manage my time to do specific small tasks day by day, which will ultimately contribute to my completion of the assignment on time. His grading is sometimes quite tough to students, but I believe that he completely exposed the students’ real writing abilities. The interesting thing in his class is that he always gives students the second chance when they failed in their assignments. In addition, he delivers his lesson in a very clear way and always encourage students to show their opinions.

Throughout inquiries in this class, I can see that my writing has literally improved despite not much. I know that I am a person who hardly can change my writing style, which is bad and unclear. However, the way that I approach the writing tasks has changed significantly. In the past, I always started to write immediately what I thought about the topic without any outlines or questions that need to be taken into account. Then, thanks to this course, I learned a lot of new things, ranging from what is rhetoric, how to analyze, apply it, how to organize a scientific writing. Being in this class, I can also learn a lot of things besides writing such as how to review other writings, how to make a video, a website, how to have a good presentation. I suppose that all of these things will be useful to me in classes in the future.

During 3 months in this class, I received a bunch of feedback from both my professor and classmates about my writing skills. One thing that I still need to improve in the future is the way to express my ideas, which is still not direct and unorganized. I also need to improve my word use and grammar since sometimes I made mistakes. In the next semesters at Miami University, I believe that I should learn more about technical writing, some vocabularies related to my major, which will be useful for my future career. Looking back, I think this course helped, prepared and changed me so much, and I am so excited to apply what I have learned in the future.
